Welcome to Weiss

Lake Weiss (pronounced "Wice") is an Alabama Power Company hydroelectric impoundment covering 30,200 acres in northeast Alabama on the Alabama - Georgia border. The Weiss Lake fishery is the major economic influence in Cherokee County, so the locals treat anglers very well. Four free public access areas and 37 privately run marinas service Lake Weiss. Campgrounds, motels and rental cabins dot the shoreline of the lake. It was named after Fernando C. Weiss, who was born in Dallas, Texas, March 5, 1892. He was hired by Alabama Power in 1913.

Weiss Lake in extreme Northeast Alabama crosses the Alabama/Georgia line and is owned and operated by the Alabama Power Company. The lake consists of 30,200 acres, all coming from the Coosa RiverChattooga River (Alabama–Georgia), and Little River, offering over 447 miles of shoreline and shallow flats, large coves, under-water drop-offs and deep channels. Lake Weiss also has privately owned hotels, marinas, campgrounds, and bait and tackle stores. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Weiss Lake is convenient to some of the South’s most beloved natural wonders such as Cherokee Rock Village, one of the premier rock climbing locales in the Southeast, as well as Little River Canyon - the largest canyon east of the Mississippi River.

Weiss Lake is the place to be on a warm summer day. Whatever your pleasure - fishing, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, camping, picnicking, sailing, swimming or just watching the water slowly lap the shoreline - you'll find it at Weiss Lake. Winter brings a gentle appearance for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful sunsets.

Lodging opportunities include motels, resorts, bed and breakfasts, cabins, camping and RV sites. While Weiss Lake may be the centerpiece of Cherokee County, many other recreational activities can be found within minutes. Blow your own glass ornament, paddle the Terrapin, hike the trails and explore the natural adventures at Cherokee Rock Village, Little River National Preserve and Canyon Mouth Park Recreation Area, and The Pinhoti Trail. Visit historical Civil War sites, Cornwall Furnace, and others.

Cherokee County offers an unbeatable central location with easy access to some of north Alabama's best golf. The Cherokee Country Club's 18-hole course provides year-round play for golfers. With a balanced mix of tight fairways and enough water to create some intimidating tee shots, the challenging course will test each player's shot-making ability.
